LASER SCANNING: PRESENTATION

The geometry of the objects of daily use becomes increasingly complex. To obtain a reliable mathematical description, it is necessary to raise a very great quantity of points. In other cases, it can be impossible to measure fragile or flexible materials, using traditionnal sensors with contact.

The principle of the laser scanning



principeThe laser scanning is a technology which adapts perfectly to the present needs for quality control.

 The system operates in the following way:

- a blade of structured light is projected on the surface of the part.

- a camera integrated in the sensor receives by triangulation the reflected laser light and works out its variations of distance and profile.

- the image of the line is then converted into 3D points.


Information on positioning of the whole (camera/laser) compared to the object makes it possible to locate the points of the laser in space. One can then assemble the sections and constitute information 3D on all the surface of the object (point cloud).





Work process


The laser scanning is typically directed towards 2 applications:
- the mathematical rebuilding of surface (reverse engineering)
- the dimensional inspection and the comparison with a CAD model
